University of Greenwich researchers behind an invention that captures CO2 have won the Times Higher Education Award for their “Outstanding Contribution to Innovation and Technology”. Dr Colin Hills and Dr Paula Carey from the Medway based School of Science were told their innovation “could drastically reduce the impact of climate change” at a ceremony at a Park Lane hotel last night.
The two scientists have developed a technology which converts contaminated land and industrial waste into harmless pebbles - capturing large amounts of carbon dioxide at the same time.
Judging the category, Peter Ringrose of the Technology Strategy Board said: “This is an excellent example of academic research applying novel technology and directing it at a very relevant application. This is how innovative knowledge transfer should work, and due credit should go to those involved in a truly collaborative piece of work involving university researchers and industry culminating in the creation of a start-up company with significant future potential.”
Professor Tom Barnes, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research & Enterprise at the University of Greenwich, says: “We are delighted to see technology at the University of Greenwich recognised in this way. The award epitomises the mission of our university which is to make a real, practical difference in the region and the country.”
Dr Carey says: “We are thrilled to have our work recognised in this high-profile competition. The company we have formed, Carbon8, is in trials with several industrial partners and the potential of the technology is very exciting.”
Dr Hills adds: “The award recognises the importance of low carbon technologies in dealing with problems arising from climate change.”
If trials are successful, the UK could benefit from 500,000 tonnes of dangerous greenhouse gas CO2 being captured through the carbonation of household waste alone.
The awards ceremony was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.
