APA – Lagos (Nigeria) The head of the Special Climate Change Unit of Nigeria’s Ministry of Environment, Dr Victor Fodeke, has advised state governments and institutions in Nigeria to acquire carbon credit before installing solar renewable energy.
Fodeke told journalists in Abuja on Saturday that solar energy would reduce carbon emissions in Nigeria.
“We want all the states and institutions that are installing solar renewable energy and wind hydro programme, among others, to get in touch with us before breaking grounds.
“If they inform us early enough, it will earn them carbon credit, and if they refuse, that means they will not be able to calculate the baseline of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
“The Ministry of Environment is the only focal point that can help them to obtain the carbon credit,’’ he said.
Fodeke also advised the Zamfara state government in northern Nigeria to get in touch with the unit before commissioning its big hydro-electric dam since it would increase the tally of Nigeria’s carbon credit.
Carbon credit is a key component of the national and international emissions trading scheme that is implemented to mitigate global warming.
