A household can reduce its carbon footprint by becoming more efficient in its use of water, the Environment Agency has advised.
Ensuring there are no leaks in a property’s piping system and boilers are efficient can improve energy use in a home, the agency explained.
The report calls on the government to review the regulatory framework surrounding hot water systems and for planners and developers to include water efficiency measures in energy saving initiatives.
Ian Barker, the Environment Agency’s head of water, said: “Water is a precious resource and as the government outlined in last week’s Low Carbon Transition Plan, we urgently need to cut carbon emissions to help reduce the impact of future climate change.
“Currently, six per cent of the UK’s annual carbon emissions are related to water use - nearly 90 per cent of that is from hot water use in the home. It’s clear we need to find ways of being smarter with the way we use hot water.”
UK businesses could save themselves £3.5 billion by being more efficient with their water use.
