OGDEN, Utah (AP) - Weber County is using garbage dumped in landfills in Ogden and Layton to make money by selling carbon offset credits.
Weber County and Wasatch Integrated Waste Management System already turn methane gas generated in the trash heaps into electricity.
Now they’re also making money by selling carbon credits they’ve been awarded for reducing greenhouse gases.
Weber County Solid-waste Manager Gary Laird says that last spring the county made $102,000 selling credits it was awarded by the Chicago Climate Exchange.
Laird says the credits were worth up to $7 each, a price that has dropped considerably since then.
Wasatch Integrated Executive Director Nathan Rich says it sold about $14,000 worth of credits at a $2 rate.
