(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — E-marketing, web development and web hosting provider The Free State Group (www.freestategroup.com) announced on Wednesday it is purchasing carbon offsets from cabon offset non-profit organization Carbonfund.org (www.carbonfund.org).
Carbon offsets let individuals and businesses to reduce carbon dioxide emissions they are responsible for in their everyday lives by supporting renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects where they are most cost effective.
Carbonfund.org’s CarbonFree Partner program supports renewable energy, energy efficiency, and reforestation projects in the US and abroad to reduce carbon dioxide pollution and help hasten our transition to a clean energy future.
The Free State Group says it has also been using server virtualization technologies that let it host more websites with fewer power-intensive servers for several years.
“We’ve had several clients ask what steps we’ve taken to lessen our impact on the environment,” says Tyler Eagleton, co-founder of the Free State Group. “We know that our hosting facility in Kansas City depends on electricity - there’s no way around that. However, there is a way to do it cleanly and with as little environmental impact as possible. We already utilize server virtualization technology to lessen our power demands but as of today, we’re proud to say that we’re offsetting more than three times the carbon that we’re currently responsible for generating. This enables our clients and their customers to feel good knowing that we’re all doing our parts to create a sustainable future.”
Some environmentalists argue that carbon offsets are nothing more than a way for companies to promote themselves as “green”, because carbon offsets typically lack clear standards or assurance they are reducing carbon.
Carbonfund.org, however, offers third party standards, verification and auditing, as well as lets companies choose the project they would like to contribute to when purchasing carbon offsets.
The Free State Group has chosen to purchase alternative power carbon offsets equivalent to more than three times the carbon emmissions the company actually produces.
With offices in Kansas City and Houston, The Free State Group provides e-marketing, web development and hosting services.
