Edmonton, Alberta (AHN) - More Alberta farmers are participating in the province’s carbon offset projects. According to a report released Thursday by the Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development the number of registered projects rose to 25 in 2008 from only seven in 2007.
The agricultural offsets were sold for $11 to $13.50 per ton. With 3.5 million tons of carbon dioxide, about $11 billion was paid back to the agriculture sector in Alberta.
Alberta Agriculture and Food climate change program planner Kerrianne Koehler-Munro said 10 of the 25 projects registered last year used minimum till or no-till agriculture methods, which produced less carbon dioxide.
Alberta’s greenhouse gas emitters are required by the province to cut their CO2 discharges by 12 percent yearly by tapping cleaner technology, paying $15 per ton of greenhouse gas emissions into the Climate Change and Emissions Management Fund and buying Alberta-produced carbon offsets.
Most of the Alberta companies that buy carbon credits usually purchase 50,000 tons or more per transaction.
The carbon credits of Alberta farmers are merged through market service providers called aggregators and sold to large firms. About 1,000 farmers have benefited from the aggregator service.
Koehler-Munro said in a statement, “Agriculture and forestry are the two industries that can sequester carbon… The offset registry will function as a ‘meeting place’ for buyers and settlers. It will allow Alberta project developers, farmers and/or aggregators to showcase their project and the third-party verification assurance information for prospective buyers.”
