Sen. Merkley’s quote at the town hall meeting in Monmouth leaves me confused. The Statesman Journal (”Senator hosts a healthy town hall debate in Monmouth,” June 29) quotes him as saying he is “an advocate for pursuing the framework in sequestering CO2 through various, emerging technologies, including how it would affect Oregon forests.”
My dictionary defines “sequestering,” as “to withdraw from, or take out of the world at large; hide safely away.”
In 10th-grade science we learned about the system already in place that deals with CO2, called photosynthesis. When CO2 lands on a plant containing chlorophyll and combines with moisture, it converts into organic matter in the presence of light, and oxygen is formed.
Here’s the confusion: If CO2 is removed and photosynthesis stops, oxygen won’t be created and what will we breathe?
