Carbon dioxide equivalent emissions have dropped by almost two per cent between 2006 and 2007, according to figures released by the government and subsequently questioned by campaigners.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) released figures that showed emissions of the six gases regulated by the Kyoto Protocol were cut by 1.7 per cent, from 647.9 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2006 to 636.6 million in 2007.

However, criticism has been levelled at the figures by the World Development Movement as they don’t take aviation into account.

Other critics have noted that UK emissions calculations should include the carbon footprint of products and energy consumed in the country not just those produced here.

Even by the figures presented by the DECC, the government is not on track to meet the target of cutting CO2 emissions by 20 per cent relative to 1990 levels by 2010.

Even taking into account controversial emissions trading, just 12.8 per cent of reductions have been made since 1990, without them emissions of the main greenhouse gas have come down 8.5 per cent.
