A public consultation on guidelines being produced to help businesses manage and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions has been launched by the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).
The guidance, which is a requirement of the Climate Change Act 2008, aims to show organisations the processes by which they can calculate their corporation’s carbon footprint.
Due for publication by October 1st 2009, they are being written in association with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Commenting on the consultation, climate change minister Joan Ruddock said: “If we are going to tackle climate change effectively then we need to help organisations calculate their own carbon footprint.
She added that the guidance will help organisations trying to reduce their emissions by investing in renewable energy or improving their energy efficiency to “clearly and credibly” demonstrate as much.
The government is likely to make such reporting on greenhouse gases mandatory for all UK organisations in the near future.
“Those organisations who grasp the opportunity now to develop robust reporting will be well placed to respond to the government’s planned approach to mandatory reporting,” Ms Ruddock said.
