Volkswagen has confirmed that new high-economy, low-CO2 BlueMotion versions of three of its cars are production-ready and will go on sale in the UK early next year. All three feature revised front bumpers, sill extensions, relocated air ducts and lower ride height in the interests of better aerodynamics so that the engine has less work to do pushing the car through the air.
The most dramatic figures relate to the Polo BlueMotion. With the help of higher than normal gearing, regenerative braking and an automatic stop/start system, the 1.2-litre turbo diesel Polo has a combined economy figure of 85.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 87g/km. That’s much better than the original BlueMotion, and a long way under the threshold for VED payments.
Impressively enough, the larger Golf BlueMotion is also VED-exempt thanks to a CO2 rating of 99g/km. Combined fuel economy for this model is 74.3mpg.
The even larger Passat BlueMotion (pictured above) obviously can’t match these figures, but it has been improved considerably. The two-litre TDI turbo diesel engine of the previous version has been replaced by a 104bhp 1.6-litre unit, resulting in a fuel economy increase from 57.6mpg to 64.2mpg and a drop in CO2 emissions from 128g/km to 114g/km.
UK prices for all three models will be announced nearer the official launch date.
