MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Efforts by Vermont and 13 other states to cut carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles are expected to get a big boost from President Obama.
Officials in Washington say Obama is ready to announce his support for emission reductions that would require better fuel efficiency.
Car makers sued Vermont in U.S. District Court two years ago when it adopted new California emission rules. Federal Judge William Sessions III ruled in the state’s favor, but the Bush administration had blocked the new rules from taking effect.
Obama also is pushing ahead on new rules that would require average fuel efficiency of 35 miles per gallon by 2020. Vermont, California and the other states had set a target of 43 mph by 2016.
