A Carbon Market Business Opportunities seminar will be held on Sunday under the auspices of Minister of Environment HE Abdullah Mubarak al-Midhadi and the British Ambassador to Qatar John Hawkins.
The seminar at the Movenpick Towers & Suites will look to promote the carbon market and build UK-Qatar partnerships.
A group of UK-based carbon-related companies looking to establish partnerships with Qatar firms will also be present.
A spokesman for the organisers said: ?Developing a low-carbon, high-growth economy is a key challenge for countries around the world today. The carbon market has a vital role to play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and last year doubled in size compared with 2007 to be worth over $120bn.
?With the growth of the carbon market has come the growth of companies with particular expertise in climate-change projects and emissions trading. The UK government has encouraged private sector companies to participate in the market and the City of London has taken the lead in building the carbon investment and advisory services infrastructure necessary to finance greenhouse gas reduction projects.?
The British mission is led by the UK Climate Change Projects Office (CCPO). The seminar will focus on the funding and development of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects and other carbon trading and climate change services.
?As companies and governments consider potential changes, developments and the likely shape of the global carbon market post-2012 (when commitments under the Kyoto protocol come to an end), the seminar will also discuss issues affecting carbon market business in the UK and in Qatar.?
The primary aim of the trade mission will be to develop long-term partnerships between UK-based and Qatar-based firms.
The spokesman said Qatar-based delegates would have the opportunity to understand current opportunities in the carbon market such as the CDM and where there was potential or CDM projects in Qatar, get practical advice on how to prepare, finance and develop CDM projects, consider future business opportunities in the broader carbon market and meet members of the UK delegation for more detailed one to one business meetings.
?The seminar will contribute towards increasing the understanding of carbon market-related business opportunities in Qatar and assist Qatari companies to access funding and project developers, he added.
