The Washington State Recycling Association has awarded its 2010 Youth Education Recycler of the Year Award to Bellevue for the city’s Carbon Yeti program
The Carbon Yeti cartoon character is a large, hairy, “bigfoot” creature who is wasteful of the planet’s resources. A pledge book explaining climate change shows the character learning easy ways to reduce his carbon footprint around the home.
The city has taken its Carbon Yeti program into Bellevue science fairs and middle schools through a partnership with Puget Sound Energy’s Powerful Choices for the Environment program.
Students take home pledge books that explain climate change and suggest ways to reduce energy use. Residents from 847 households have sent in pledge cards listing efforts to reduce their carbon footprints, according to the city.
