Taipei, Dec. 4 (CNA) Products or services featuring lower carbon emissions can better appeal to consumers amid rising environmental awareness, and new information and communications technology (ICT) plays a big role in this process, Acer’s chairman said Saturday.
“Consumers worldwide are being educated (on the issue) and are changing their values and concepts as they experience the real impact of extreme weather, ” said J.T. Wang, the head of the world’s second-largest PC brand, at the opening ceremony in Taipei of ICT Month, Taiwan’s largest consumer electronics show.
“Consumers are now more willing to pay for products or services that can help reduce energy and cut carbon emissions,” he said.
The global efforts to conserve energy can benefit from the technologies and applications of the ICT industry, which can greatly enhance efficiency, Wang said.
Many countries have applied new ICT technologies to city infrastructure, buildings, transport and power systems, he noted.
He estimated that the use of new ICT technologies will make a 15-percent to 20- percent contribution to cutting carbon emissions and energy use.
In addition, Wang said that Taiwan, with its existing technological advantage, will be able to serve as a leader in the new ICT industry that will spawn new services through the integration of computer, communications, consumer electronics and content.
“The mixture of these different technologies and content will create many new products and services that we have never seen before,” he said.
“These new markets represent huge opportunities worth hundreds of billions of U.S. dollars, ” he said, citing as examples new handheld devices such as tablet computers, e-readers and smartphones.
“This change has just started and is likely to last for more than 10 years,” he said.
Taiwan has a good opportunity to come out ahead in these fields, as the country already has a competitive edge in the ICT industry, Wang said, urging the government to invest more in the sector. (By Alex Jiang) ENDITEM/J
