LONDON, March 18 (Reuters) – The European Commission said on Thursday it would close from August a loophole which had allowed different companies to surrender the same carbon permits for compliance with targets in its emissions trading scheme.
In the meantime the European Union executive would from Friday suspend the process where companies count carbon offsets against their emissions, except during the two-week period leading up to a April 30 deadline to comply with their 2009 emissions caps.
