A smaller carbon footprint

The industrial sector in the United Arab Emirates is making strides to clean up its own backyard for a better ecological tomorrow, assert industry leaders.

By reducing electrical demands, using sustainable resources and more eco-friendly components as well as implementing water-saving devices, companies are helping to cut the UAE’s carbon footprint in a big way.

Hassan Oman, General Manager of the Technical and Quality Department at Dubai Cable Company (Ducab) said his company’s three manufacturing sites and seven business units have adopted a host of new environmental measures for better business.

The manufacturer of electrical cables of up to 132 kV, Ducab is a joint venture between the Dubai and Abu Dhabi governments and has been in operation since the late 1970s.

“Clean production is a full life-cycle approach through the chain of business,” Oman said, adding that “we consider the total cost” of using high-grade copper and lead-free PVC to produce cable.

“As a philosophy, we resource our materials from a responsible supplier who must demonstrate they have sustainable practices within their companies,” Oman said.

As policy, Ducab also supplies its manufacturing plants with new machinery that encompasses the latest state-of-the-art technologies for more efficient production, he said.

Green technology can go a long way to creating not only a more ecologically balanced production line but also a healthier work environment for employees, said Shabbir Nullwala, Factory Manager of Al Gurg Paints in Sharjah.

The paint factory has embarked on a multi-faceted clean-production strategy to reduce noise levels, waste management and air pollution, he said.

For example, Nullwalla said the company identified one of its production machines as emanating industrial noise levels of 100 decibels. The machine was enclosed in “a sound-barrier room” and the sound was reduced to 80 decibels.

To further reduce volatile organic compounds (VOC), Al Gurg Paints is now performing seven air exchanges in its factory, Nullwalla said.

The move has reduced VOC and particulate matter levels from 3.8 parts per million to 2.9 ppm.

The steep decline in compound levels was achieved, he said, using “wind-driven exhaust fan
