Engineers could be called upon to implement a number of low-carbon technologies if the UK wants to lower its carbon emissions.
Speaking at a Royal Society meeting, professor Paul Elkins said “very significant quantities of these technologies are required” if the government was serious about reducing emissions.
“The sorts of technologies they are thinking of are more efficient vehicles, nuclear, gas-propelled substitution, carbon capturing and storage,” he said.
Professor Elkins recommended that 1,000 gigawatts of nuclear power was needed as well as increasing the amount of wind power facilities by 50 times the current level.
He also said that the UK needed to generate 700 times as much solar power as it did in 2004.
A report from the Confederation of British Industries in November said that it was “key” that the UK start developing and utilising low-carbon technologies.
It also said that a “co-ordinated effort” was needed from businesses and the government to make sure that the country is ready to “exploit the potential” of a low-carbon economy.
