The Ecosystem Marketplace’s Forest Carbon News

| Sourced From |

In August, a round of informal talks in Bonn, Germany August 10-14th fell short of groundbreaking news but sought clarity amidst what could become chaos. One ‘non-paper’ clearly detailed all proposals related to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) and surprisingly – in a move that leaves no room for anonymity – included attribution to each countries’ contributions. In other news, the back and forth between developed and developing nations continued in the realm of land use, land-use change, and forestry (LULUCF), until it was agreed that long-term emissions should be implemented on a land versus activity basis, that is all emissions from a land area will be accounted for regardless of how the land is used. Developed nation delegates claimed 2013 was far too soon for accurate accounting, while their developing world counterparts contested that such nations had been accounting on a land basis since 2005. More updates to come on this front as we receive them.

Even in the generally quiet month of August, stakeholders have continued to churn out new projects and methodologies. Read on to learn more about the landmark commercial reforestation project, Campo Verde, validated under the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), the DRC’s first reforestation project, a Paraguayan reforestation project recently registered with the CDM, the release of Version 3.0 of the CarbonFix standard for forest carbon projects and finally the adoption of the Climate Action Reserve’s (CAR) Forest Project Protocol 3.0. You will also find an introduction to forest carbon methodologies and the Forest Carbon Portal’s latest Methodology and Standards Watch.

On the social end, there are a few events we’d like to share. First, please join us for an evening of drinks and networking hosted by Markit Environmental Registry and Ecosystem Marketplace’s Forest Carbon Portal right after the Forestry Carbon Markets and REDD Green Power Conference. If that’s not enough, mark your calendars for a round table discussion and cocktail reception hosted by Hunton & Williams, LLP and Ecosystem Marketplace.

That’s just a brief overview of this month’s topics. Scroll down and read on for all the latest news in the ever-evolving world of forest carbon.
