Carbon emissions are green house gases that most everything on the planet gives off in some way or another. These gases add to heat of the planet, but are essential to the temperature of the planet, without them the earth would be too cold to live on.
Carbon offsets are projects you invest in through companies and business that allow you to reverse your carbon emissions that you have added the greenhouse gasses that are accumulating daily by everyone on the planet.
With these carbon offsets and the companies that help you to reverse your footprint on the earth, come controversy on whether it is an industry trying to make money or if it the actual fact of reversing what you have created. Many people will argue about whether the offset purchases are a scam or not and other will say otherwise. But, carbon offsets are real and very justifiable and verifiable as well.
The purchases of these offsets through alternative energy projects, such as wind energy or hydropower that help curb your carbon dioxide (greenhouse gas) emissions on planet earth. But, there are companies that will attempt to take advantage of you through this process. The best way to know if the company is legit and on the up-and-up is to make sure they give you a time line of when your investment will be taking into effect and when and what it will be used for. Also, make sure they are verified through a Gold Standard or other reputable company.
