The government has released a list of companies emitting more than a set level of greenhouse gases in fiscal 2007, which has revealed an increase in emissions in the electric power and manufacturing industries.

The list is aimed to encourage efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, and was released by the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry based on the Law Concerning the Promotion of Measures to Cope with Global Warming. This is the second list released so far, following one in fiscal 2006.

Aside from minor ranking shuffles, the 10 worst offenders were largely the same as in the previous list.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) topped the list for the second time, emitting 94.52 million tons of greenhouse gas, up by 37 percent from the previous fiscal year. The rise was the result of the shutdown of Niigata Prefecture’s Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant due to damage from the Chuetsu Offshore Earthquake, with high carbon dioxide-emitting thermal power plants used to make up for power shortages.

The list is as follows:

1. Tokyo Electric Power Co. (94.52 million tons)

2. Nippon Steel Corp. (63.05 million tons)

3. JFE Steel Corp. (62.53 million tons)

4. Chubu Electric Power Co. (57.57 million tons)

5. Electric Power Development Co. (J-POWER, 45.25 million tons)

6. Tohoku Electric Power Co. (33.73 million tons)

7. The Chugoku Electric Power Co. (27.40 million tons)

8. The Kansai Electric Power Co. (27.07 million tons)

9. Sumitomo Metal Industries (23.67 million tons)

10. Kyushu Electric Power Co. (22.55 million tons)
