HOUSEHOLDS and businesses up and down the Dee Valley could be saving thousands of pounds while reducing their carbon footprint, thanks to a new trust that has just been set up in Llangollen.
The Llangollen and Dee Valley Low Carbon Trust is the brainchild of Cllr Lucy Morris and has been launched with a donation of £4,000 from ProAdventure Ltd, thanks to its membership of the conservation group “1% for the Planet”.
ProAdventure director Peter Carol said: “Being a member of 1% for the Planet encourages your business to donate 1 per cent of its annual profits to a local environmental charity, so this new Dee Valley organisation has come along at just the right time.
“The Llangollen and Dee Valley Low Carbon Trust’s aims of promoting and delivering local energy conservation and sustainable energy development, carbon reduction as well as education for home, business and leisure fits in perfectly with what we were looking for.”
The injection of instant funding is already being put to good use. A team of 10 volunteers, mainly from the local Friends of the Earth group, has been trained as energy auditors and members have started to conduct household energy efficiency surveys with follow up advice across Llangollen.
A feasibility study focusing on potential sources of renewable energy in the area is planned, focusing on the potential hydro-electric benefits of the River Dee itself – and that’s not all.
Judith Dodd, chairman of the Llangollen Enterprise, said: “Retail members of the Llangollen Enterprise are also looking at ways to encourage local people to eat and shop within the town. It will not only help these businesses directly but also reduce the carbon footprint of residents driving elsewhere. Saving money and helping the planet in one go can’t be a bad thing.
“Llangollen has a unique and special mix in terms of its community, independent shops and tourist offer. It’s hoped the trust will bring the entire town together in a variety of ways to lower our carbon footprint and do so in ways that benefit the local economy and community.”
