Environmentalists from claim that offsetting carbon emissions is not very a useful strategy if one considers the bigger picture of tackling climate change.

Although the charity did accept the role of offsetting in the shift towards a low-carbon economy, it was still in emissions reductions. An FOE representative further added that offsetting may even encourage people to carry on with their emission-generating activities, as they may deem it sufficient to offset emissions rather than cut them.
“It distracts attention from the wider, systemic changes and political action that need to be taken in the transition to a low-carbon economy,” claimed the representative.
However, the official position of UK government’s seems contrary to this; it says that the concept of offsetting does bring more environmental awareness to people and encourages investments in low-carbon technologies. This is probably true because the higher cost of offsets would indeed encourage businesses to find alternate ways so that they will have to buy minimum offsets.
