Cowichan is now home to B.C.’s largest solar hot-water bulk buy, a local Carbon Buster says.
Peter Nix said about 28 Cowichan families have banded together to lighten their carbon footprint by buying the solar units that should pay for themselves in savings in less than 10 years.
The bulk buy was supported by the SolarBC program providing incentives of more than $2,000 to homeowners installing solar hot water.
An average solar system costs $6,700, with roughly 60 percent coverage of a home’s annual energy use.
“Once the system is paid for,” said bulk buyer Nix, “you can shower and wash those never-ending dirty dishes for half the price of your neighbour.
“This bulk buy will stimulate our economy – a big issue for both public and politicians alike in an era when local paper mills and sawmills are closing down.”
SolarBC has certified auditors to measure a home’s energy loss before and after the solar install.
“You have to do the audit to get the provincial and federal rebates,” said Nix.
He’s happy with initial buy-in to the solar hot water purchase.
“But this is only a start. We consider it a pilot project.
“After this first 28, more people will start converting to solar hot-water and we’ll create more business.
“With the pay back in five to 10 years, it’s a no-brainer.”
