Federal Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull says carbon capture technologies have been neglected by the Rudd Government in its carbon pollution reduction scheme (CPRS).

Visiting Newcastle today Mr Turnbull witnessed how biomass, like wood chips, can be used to create energy and the waste charcoal stored in the ground safely.

The Opposition’s climate change policy was announced yesterday, with its main focus being carbon capture and storage.

Mr Turnbull says this type of technology is not only great for the environment but will also help to increase jobs.

“But it has been completely neglected by the rudd government’s CPRS,” he said.

“We have an enormous opportunity here in Australia… to absorb millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, store it safely as carbon and and put it back it the soil and increase the productivity and the health of our own landscape.”
