The pressure group, Sustainable Agricultural Communities Australia, is opposing emissions trading legislation that gives tax deductions for trees planted as carbon sinks.
It raised the issue as a priority at its AGM in Tasmania this week.
SACA chairman, Robert Belcher, says the scheme will make no impact on climate change and will affect millions of hectares of farm land.
“We’re picking up on figures from ABARE,” he says.
“We’re looking at something like 34 million hectares being planted to trees in high rainfall areas, which is 30 per cent greater than the entire area of Australia that is under crop.”
