TNT Malaysia held for the first time its Drive me Challenge recently – an international competition by TNT to increase awareness amongst the tens of thousands of own drivers and sub-contractors to engage and encourage them to drive both safely and more fuel efficiently. TNT’s most efficientTNT pick-up and delivery (PUD) driver in Malaysia was selected to represent TNT South East Asia, to compete internationally in TNT’s Drive me Challenge in the United Kingdom in September. This competition, which was held at Metro Driving Academy in Puchong is part of TNT’s comprehensive environmental initiative, Planet Me, which was launched in 2007 to reduce TNT’s carbon emissions.
“Our business is about transporting goods from one location to another, by air or by road. But just as we are part of the problem of carbon dioxide emissions, we also want to be a part of the solution. We want to do our part in reducing carbon emissions. This competition was an exciting way to engage all our employees, especially PUD drivers, to drive efficiently. The Drive Me challenge recognises this effort. Apart from driving efficiently, all TNT employees are encouraged to do their part to save the environment such as lights-off during lunch breaks, switching off their computers, practising the 3Rs – reduce, re-use, recycle. This is applicable not only at work but at home. ” Said Ms. Chan Swee Hwa, Human Resource Director for TNT Express Worldwide (M) Sdn. Bhd.
The key objectives of TNT Drive Me Challenge are to build awareness and enthusiasm for a new way of driving and encourage PUD drivers to increase fuel efficiency and safety, to reduce CO2 emissions and operating costs, and to support the overall Planet me aim to make TNT the first zero emission global transport company. TNT research shows that a single TNT PUD driver can reduce its CO2 emissions by as much as 25% by driving more efficiently. TNT expects to improve the overall fuel efficiency of its vehicle fleet with about 5 per cent. For the participating entities, this equates to potential CO2 savings of about 15 kilotonnes and savings in fuel costs of more than RM5 million per year.
Noor Azam bin Azami was the winner of the national challenge that was held on 16th August 2009 at Metro Driving Academy, Puchong. He completed the obstacle and PUD skill challenge with the shortest total time of 7 minutes and 35 seconds. He will team up with the Regional Operations Director to represent TNT South East Asia to compete in the finals of TNT’s Drive me Challenge, which will be held at MIRA1, United Kingdom on the 30th September 2009.
