NEW YORK — In the first such move by a Japanese manufacturer, Toshiba Corp. will begin selling carbon credits to Japanese and overseas firms by taking on overseas projects that cut greenhouse gas emissions, the Nikkei newspaper reported on its Web site Sunday local time, citing unidentified company sources.
Under the plan, Toshiba, in partnership with a Vietnamese food company, will collect methane gas from wastewater at Vietnamese food plants, the report said. The partnership will take on three projects by the end of fiscal 2010, generating an expected 70,000 metric tons worth of carbon credits and 200 million to 300 million yen ($2 million-$3 million) in sales annually, the Nikkei said.
