Dr. Abboud & Dr. Moussa speak about the GCC’s vast potential for participation in the global carbon trade, as well as CDM project opportunities & carbon reduction initiatives in the region.

The CarbonWorld Interview is presented as a sneak preview of CarbonWorld Doha 2009, and can be accessed for free at the CarbonWorld Doha 2009 website.

To make sense of trends in the region’s emerging market, and pinpoint opportunities that can’t be missed, the CarbonWorld Doha 2009 team interviewed Mr. Souheil H. Abboud and Dr. Charbel Moussa, two top executives at Ecosecurities Middle East for the inaugural episode of the CarbonWorld Interview series.

An interactive discussion on the Middle East’s vast potential for participation in the global carbon trade, as well as CDM project opportunities in the region, the CarbonWorld Interview previews the clarity of insights and level of interaction at CarbonWorld Doha 2009.

Mr. Souheil H. Abboud, Ecosecurities’ Regional Director (Middle East), is one of the most recognised names in the Middle East’s carbon market, and one of the key contributors at the CarbonWorld Interview and CarbonWorld Doha 2009.

Mr. Abboud has over 12 years of international experience in developing, managing, structuring and financing renewable energy and energy efficiency projects / companies in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

During the interview, Mr. Abboud shared on why he believes the GCC has tremendous potential to become a key player in the global carbon market. Touching on the region’s oil and gas sector as a major growth factor, he said,

‘The average oil & gas project has the potential to generate an average of a million CERs per annum, as opposed to an average biogas or renewable energy project that can generate between a 100 to 200 CERs per annum. It’s a no-brainer. The size of the potential is enormous.’

Also speaking at the CarbonWorld Interview was Dr. Charbel Moussa, a Senior Project Manager at EcoSecurities Middle East DMCC. Dr. Moussa has worked on several Emission Reduction projects across different technologies, including renewable energy, energy efficiency and methane avoidance, and is an expert on voluntary carbon markets, handling the origination of Verified Emission Reduction projects and EcoSecurities’ business development activities in Turkey.

Dr. Moussa’s spoke authoritatively on the future of the carbon industry in the region, and called on the industry to continue developing clean technologies and CDM in the Middle East. He said, ‘For this region, given the lack of credit in the market today, CDM and Carbon Finance offers a new source, an extra source of revenue, and project developers and investors should tap into this new revenue stream and make the most of it.’

CarbonWorld Doha 2009, to be held on the 27-28 April 2009, will examine all these latest developments and map Qatar’s aggressive policy, research and economic initiatives in developing a low carbon economic model while maintaining their status as the largest gas producer in the world.
