June 28: Airlines all over the world, better watch out. An industrial engineering student of Anna University, Chennai, has come out with a device to monitor the carbon dioxide emission by aircraft, an issue tormenting global environment.
“We can find and even forecast emission levels by various kinds of aircraft flying over India. The one-year-long study has identified about 28 factors causing carbon dioxide emission by aircraft. Carbon emission is directly linked to fuel consumption,” Jayapal Nirmalraj, ME student, department of Industrial Engineering, told Deccan Chronicle.
The study was carried out in association with a private airliner which helped Nirmalraj with the data. “We studied factors like temperature, routes, duration of the journey and a host of other factors. It is possible to estimate the carbon emission levels by aircraft based on these factors,” he said.
Prof Malligai, who guided Nirmalraj, said a software was being developed to monitor and control emission levels. “The type and weight of aircraft, amount of fuel and its consumption rate will give us a clear picture of the emission level. If the airlines provide us with the kind of aircraft being flown, we can forecast their emission levels for the next five years,” she said.
