THE Commonwealth government has invited feedback on the draft legislation and methodology guidelines for the proposed carbon farming initiative from farmers, land holders and forest growers by January 21.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Greg Combet said the early drafts were available to allow potential participants in the scheme to be able to gauge how they might get involved and help identify any gaps or unintended impacts of the legislation.
The National Farmer’s Federation (NFF) said it was a prudent measure.
NFF economic and trade manager Charles McElhone said their two main areas of concern around the offset integrity standards outlined were that of additionality and permanence.
Other areas of concern included perverse outcomes, administration of the carbon farming initiative, education, how it links in with existing international and domestic markets and research and development.
Mr McElhone said the draft legislation was an opportunity for farmers to actually see what they had to do to engage with the carbon market.
