I felt sorry for Patrick Bond (From renewed climate hope to absurd market expectations, December 31). His expectations that the Cancun meeting would move the world towards a “post-carbon” state were dashed.
Maybe the time has come for him to examine whether a post-carbon future is realistic. China isn’t moving that way: every year its emissions increase by about as much as SA emits in total.
The US shows no signs of making serious inroads into its vast emissions. Europe has tried trading, and, as Mr Bond noted, managed to provoke all the nastiest signs of capitalism at work.
Let him recognise his dream for what it is; he will be much happier.
