He was on the first half hour along with Nancy Young, Vice President of Environmental Affairs for the Air Transport Association.

It’s no secret that a person’s carbon footprint is affected by how and where one travels. For many people this holiday season, planes, trains and/or automobiles are needed to be with family and friends.

Carbonfund.org, whose motto is Reduce What You Can, Offset What You Can’tTM, encourages everyone to take responsibility for travel-related emissions when traveling. By supporting quality, third-party validated carbon reducing projects, a person can mitigate his or her carbon footprint from traveling.

You can find information on your carbon footprint and carbon offsets, calculate your carbon footprint, and offset your footprint by visiting www.carbonfund.org. Carbonfund.org’s blog also has a response to UK travel agency Responsible Travel’s decision to stop offering offsets for travel generally. You can read that posting here.

Dublin 23rd September 2009: EcoSecurities, a leading company in the business of sourcing, developing and trading carbon credits from greenhouse gas emission reduction projects, has partnered with Baker McKenzie LLP, a leading climaate change law firm and ClimateBiz, the resource for climate management, to launch the second edition of The Carbon Management and Offsetting Trends Survey Report 2009.

The Carbon Management and Offsetting Trends Survey was originally undertaken in 2008 to establish what the business consumer thought about the voluntary acarbon market and understand the varying views and opinions about the use of carbon offsets as part of a wider, integrated carbon management strategy. Now, one year on, there is still the same underlying impetus that climate change must be addressed, with businesses playing vital and important roles in helping society as a whole in its transition to a low carbon economy.

Highlights of the research, which samplef 280 global, multinational and regional organisations, and 31 carbon companies, included;

- Over three quarters of companies have implemented or have started developing a carbon management strategy

- Two thirds of respondents have already offset their carbon emissions or will consider offsetting in the future

- Environmental benefits (91%) were highlighted as one of the main motivations for interest in carbon offsets, closely followed by carbon neutrality and marketing (89%)

- 72% of participants nominated the US as the most desirable geographic region for purchasing offsets; this may reflect the desire for domestic projects as 56% of the respondents came from North America. Africa and South America were also rated as highly desirable locations for emission reduction projects

- Respondents prefer renewable energy projects above any other project type with solar scoring 92% and wind 86%

“It’s highly encouraging to see this growth in interest from companies taking climate action, despite the doom-and-gloom outlook on the global economy this year,” Matthew Wheeland, Managing Editor of ClimateBiz. “Although there’s still plenty of room for improvement, these survey results show that companies are keeping green issues high on their agendas.”

Lisa Ashford, Global Head of Voluntary & New Markets at EcoSecuties commented, “It is great to see from these survey results that the voluntary carbon market is continuing to gain credibility. What is also significant to note is that renewable energy is undoubtedly still the winner for buyers purchasing carbon offsets, a trend that has continued to gain momentum from the results of last year’s survey.”

The survey received 311 responses from a mix of global, multinational and regional companies covering a diverse range of sectors and industries. It provides significant insight into companies’ perceptions of carbon offset projects and the voluntary carbon market. Support for this research initiative was provided from a number of organisations, which include: 2Degrees, Borealis Offsets, Carbonoffsetsdaily.com, GreenBiz, The Karo Group and Westgate.

Background

The concept of climate change began to attract attention in the 19th Century but it was not until the 1970s did substantial debate occur. In 1997, the Kyoto Protocol became the first environmentally focused, global, legally binding document. It has set limits on carbon emissions, officially defined the six greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O, HFC, PFC and SF6) and utilised three mechanisms (Emissions trading, clean development mechanism and joint implementation) to assist the market in financially viable emission reduction schemes. The voluntary carbon market emerged to fulfill the demand from organizations and businesses that wished to reduce their carbon emissions outside and beyond the compliance market.

Many organizations, especially in the US (74%), wish to buy carbon credits from forestry projects. The voluntary carbon market has taken the lead to meet this demand through the development of tools and methodologies for forestry carbon projects. This will permit project developers to certify their projects and sell carbon credits.

Objectives

- To gain a greater understanding of the compliance and voluntary carbon market and in particular the forestry carbon market.

- To develop a tool to assist organizations, businesses and individuals to identify which carbon credit they should purchase.

- To develop a new standard with the best tools available in the market.

Research

The standards analysed are Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standard (CCBS), CarbonFix, Plan Vivo, Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), California Climate Action Reserve (CCAR) and American Carbon Registry (ACR).

The criteria include:

Afforestation/ Reforestation

Introduction

On 15 December 2008 the Commonwealth Government released a White Paper outlining the final design of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) and the medium-term target range for reducing emissions. Following this, the Government released a Discussion Paper and draft National Carbon Offset Standard (the Standard) intended to apply to voluntary abatement activity that occurs beyond that imposed by the Scheme.
The purpose of this paper is to clarify key elements of the proposed Standard, which will have significant implications for voluntary abatement action and current approaches to carbon offsetting and carbon neutrality. It is intended that this paper will assist interested parties who wish to make a submission on some of the key issues raised in the Discussion Paper.

Top North American offset providers evaluated and rated based on industry standards Customizable tool allows for tailored assistance to ensure the most effective carbon offset purchasing decisions

Executive Summary

Climate change, or rather, climate destabilization, is the greatest challenge facing the world today, and will have significant ramifications for business. To address this challenge and minimize risks, both internal and external, businesses must get their own house in order. That is, complete a Green House Gas (GHG) footprint analysis, strategically evaluate product and service offerings for climate change risks, set reduction goals for both product/service and operational GHG emissions, implement programs to achieve those reduction goals, and finally, consider carbon offset purchases.

Strategies that stimulate innovation and provide critical sources of investment into the emerging green technology sector.

In order to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, we need to reduce emissions by at least 60 percent over the coming two decades. A single magic bullet allowing governments, organizations, and individuals to meet this target is very unlikely. Instead, we need a portfolio of approaches and a communal effort to stimulate the alternative energy sector. High-quality carbon offsets can allow emitters to pool investment in the short to medium term to secure strategic emissions reductions. This mechanism stimulates innovation within organizations, since offsets attach a cost to greenhouse gas emissions and provide a critical source of investment into the emerging green technology sector.
