Kenyan project issues first REDD credits-Point Carbon

LONDON, Feb 9 – A Kenyan project has become the first to issue Redd credits under the Voluntary Carbon Standard.

NGO Wildlife Works announced Tuesday its reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation (Redd) project in Kenya’s Kasigau Corridor became the first to be issued with VCS carbon credits, known as Voluntary Carbon Units (VCUs).

London, 23rd September 2010: The worlds first ever carbon credits from an Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) project developed under Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) criteria were verified and issued this week into the VCS registry system. SOCIALCARBON Credits Help the World Bank Group Go Carbon Neutral for Its Internal Operations

SÃO PAULO, Brazil–(Business Wire)–
The Social Carbon Company (SCC), today announced that 206,178 tonnes of Brazilian originated greenhouse gas (GHG) credits verified using the SOCIALCARBON methodology have been successfully delivered to the World Bank Group. This is one of the largest transactions of such credits to date.

Background

The concept of climate change began to attract attention in the 19th Century but it was not until the 1970s did substantial debate occur. In 1997, the Kyoto Protocol became the first environmentally focused, global, legally binding document. It has set limits on carbon emissions, officially defined the six greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O, HFC, PFC and SF6) and utilised three mechanisms (Emissions trading, clean development mechanism and joint implementation) to assist the market in financially viable emission reduction schemes. The voluntary carbon market emerged to fulfill the demand from organizations and businesses that wished to reduce their carbon emissions outside and beyond the compliance market.

Voluntary Carbon Standard lays groundwork for forestry offset boom

The Voluntary Carbon Standard Association (VCSA) will today launch a new package of measures designed to strengthen its carbon offset verification scheme and lay the groundwork for the expected wave of forestry and land use-based emission-reduction projects.

Under the new requirements, emission-reduction projects wishing to carry the popular Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) label will have to adhere to more detailed and stringent requirements governing how they achieve third-party verification for their projects.

Voluntary Carbon Standard Issues Blue Source First US- based Offsets
