Opinion: Pare down kitchen’s carbon footprint

“So hot you can fry an egg on it” isn’t always an idiom.

When Melanie Campanis worked as a missionary in Buenos Aires, she watched locals fry eggs in the hot sun on a sheet of metal. The image stuck with her, and now she harnesses the sun’s rays at her Nashville home with a solar cooker to prepare cacciatore, bake potatoes and roast peanuts.

Sunrise Solar to Sell Carbon Offsets

Sunrise Solar is all set to become a carbon offset provider with the launch of its offset program for individuals and businesses. A web-based application is being developed through which consumers will be able to calculate their CO2 emissions and then purchase carbon offsets to mitigate the impact of those emissions on the environment. If the beta version of the application runs successfully, the company will introduce the full-fledged application later in the year.

Sunrise Solar to Sell Carbon Offsets

The Chairman and CEO of the company, Eddie Austin said:

“Purchasing carbon offsets is a way for consumers to make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, both locally and globally..”

Sunrise Solar is a Texas based alternative energy firm and the revenues earned through its carbon offset initiative will be used to subsidize the costs of providing solar technology and equipment. The objective is to promote the use of alternative energy among those who wouldn’t have been able to afford it at regular prices.

Texas Coal Plant Strikes Agreement with Environmental Groups to Offset Emissions

It seems that opposition against coal power plants is gaining momentum. We reported earlier that the UK government is under pressure to take strict action against coal-fired plants and now it looks like US coal plants are having a tough time as well.

NRG Texas LLC, a subsidiary of NRG Energy had come under fire for wanting to add a third plant to its Limestone Station near Houston. Initially, the Texas Clean Air Cities Coalition and the Environmental Defense Fund were planning to thwart its expansion plans. But now NRG has reached an agreement with the two groups wherein the power generator will go ahead with the third unit and has pledged to partially offset its carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions.

Among other measures, NRG will offset or sequester fifty per cent of the additional unit’s carbon emissions; invest in solar energy project or energy-efficiency projects in Texas and reduce water usage at the new unit by sixty per cent.

Jim Marston of Environmental Defense Fund applauded NRG’s efforts, he said :

“Offsets, such as the projects that NRG has committed to invest in, are a low-cost way to get the large reductions in greenhouse gases that are necessary to prevent catastrophic impacts of global warming..”
