U.N. carbon credit investors see prospects after 2012

(Reuters) – Investors in the United Nations’ Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) now have more confidence in the carbon offset market after 2012 after the number of post-2012 carbon credit deals rose in recent weeks. The CDM is part of a U.N. treaty to fight climate change, the Kyoto Protocol, whose first commitment period (2008-2012) sets emissions targets for rich nations that drive demand for carbon credits called certified emissions reductions (CERs).

Not carbon offsets, but carbon upsets

| Sourced From Guardian |

Cap-and-trade has had the perverse effect of subsidising politically dominant industries. We should try something else

These days, it’s hard to have inspiring Mr Chips moments when you teach climate change policy. My students at least seem increasingly demoralised by the tepid and technical nature of most climate debate. Which is probably why they recently challenged me to offer a proposal that was not only workable but game-changing. That’s a challenge even Mr Chips would struggle to meet, but here’s an attempt anyway: what if we could use the cap-and-trade system to reshape politics at the same time that we reduce greenhouse gas emissions? We can, if we move from carbon offsets to carbon upsets.

* Chinese developers say USC requires CDM to be viable

* Technology already mature, costs falling, says World Bank

BEIJING, Aug 25 (Reuters) – Developers of clean-coal power plants in China fear for the viability of their projects after a U.N. carbon-credit scheme denied funding for a similar plant in India at the end of July.

They said “ultra-supercritical” (USC) power stations would struggle without funds earned through the U.N.-backed Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) that lets rich countries invest in clean energy projects in developing countries.

Buyers beware: Brigands and organized criminals threaten the global carbon market

| Sourced From Stabroeknews |

Despite its relative infancy, the global carbon market is plagued with a virtual deluge of corrupt and illegal transactions. Over the past two years it appears as if the floodgates have been opened to a torrent of fraudsters, scam artists and fake businesses. It is suspected by international police authorities that this has been led by well-organized criminal elements. Such a rapid spread of corrupt practices now threaten to undermine confidence in the global carbon market, thereby constituting the third and final fundamental flaw confronting the search for market-based solutions to the global climate problem. I shall be addressing this in todays column.
