Carbon Neutral UN Building In Africa A First

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi has become the first carbon-neutral building in Africa by using solar power. A system of over 4,000 modules were installed on the roof of the new UNEP offices by German firm Energiebau Solarstromsysteme GmbH. The 515 kilowatt solar project was connected to the grid on February 21st, and is expected to generate more energy than the 1,200 employees in the building will need.

Carbon neutral: On track to achieve emissions target

NEWS LTD has become carbon neutral and is on track to achieving its goal of reducing its emissions by 20 per cent, News Limited chairman and chief executive John Hartigan has announced.

Mr Hartigan said since starting its company-wide energy reduction plan One Degree in June 2007, News Limited had achieved emissions reductions of 18.4 per cent in FY2010 and was confident that it would meet its 20 per cent goal in 2010.

A carbon neutral solar and wind powered world in 20 to 40 years?

Is it achievable? You bet! All it takes is the political and social will to make it happen says two California based researchers who have just published a study of the material resources and technology required to power the world 100 per cent by carbon emission neutral alternative energy technologies. It would also save 2.5 million to 3 million lives a year through slashing water and air pollution and simultaneously slow global warming and the problems of climate change, and develop secure, reliable energy sources and at costs comparable with what we spend on energy today.

It sounds like a no-brainer. Why don’t we do it?
