LOGAN — Utah State University has a plan to go from green to even greener.

The school has released a long-term plan that officials hope can eliminate USU’s carbon footprint by 2050.

The outlined goals include requiring that all new vehicles be hybrid or alternative fueled and the proper size for the intended use. Smaller vehicles mean less fuel.

USU also plans to start a comprehensive composting operation for food services and events.

USU is part of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, which calls for minimizing greenhouse gases.

3 injured in Zion flash flood

ZION NATIONAL PARK — Zion National Park officials say three men who were swept away by a flash flood in a canyon were able to signal for help and be rescued.

Zion spokesman Ron Terry says the men from the Las Vegas area were hiking in Spry Canyon on Saturday when about an inch of rain fell in less than 30 minutes.

Terry says all three men were washed over a 40-foot drop, and two of them went over another 60-foot plunge as the water rushed through the canyon walls. One of the men used a headlamp to signal a distress call, and an off-duty park ranger spotted the flashing light.

Two of the men were flown to a hospital in St. George. Terry said their names were not being released and he had no word on their condition on Sunday.

Artificial limbs to be on exhibit

SALT LAKE CITY — Artificial limbs and the stories behind the people that used them are the subject of a new exhibit coming to Salt Lake City.

The limbs will be on display at The Leonardo when it opens next spring.

Leonardo officials say Utah has a strong history of people and companies that have changed the technology in the field. The exhibit will be a collaboration with Otto Bock HealthCare, a German company that has operated a design and manufacturing center in West Valley City since the 1990s.

The Leonardo is scheduled to open in April.

Utah man dies in ATV accident

PARK CITY — A man is dead after crashing an all-terrain vehicle in a canyon outside of Park City.

Utah State Parks and Recreation spokeswoman Deena Loyola says 50-year-old Brett Thomas Green lost control and was thrown from the ATV on a dirt road in Tollgate Canyon on Saturday afternoon. Park rangers say Green, who was from Sandy, was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene.

The Parks and Recreation department released Green’s name Sunday.
