DECC’s response to the consultation on the proposed offshore carbon dioxide storage licensing regime

On 27 August 2010 the Department of Energy & Climate Change (“DECC”) published a response to the September 2009 consultation on the proposed offshore carbon dioxide storage licensing regime. The aim of this consultation was to introduce a licensing regime for carbon capture and storage (“CCS”) under the powers of the Energy Act 2008, thus implementing Directive 2009/31/EC on the geological storage of carbon dioxide (the “Directive”).

Why Money is the Key to Growing Low-Carbon Economies

In July, I joined the British Prime Minister on his historic visit to India, a country where a staggering 450 million people still lack access to electricity. Yet India is already the fifth largest user of energy in the world and rising. This is a massive challenge for its government.

I was hugely impressed by the way India is moving to develop green technologies and renewable energy sources. It has realised that a trinity of money, creativity and the right government support will begin to erode dependence on expensive, imported fossil fuels.

EU carbon rises on back of UK natgas gains

(Reuters) – European carbon emissions futures rose 1 percent on Wednesday after a slow start to trading, as British natural gas prices surged.

EU Allowances for December delivery rose 14 cents or 0.94 percent to 15.05 euros ($20) a tonne at 1321 GMT, with volume at 3,264 lots traded.

EUAs were largely flat in earlier trade but started to rise as volume built up and UK gas prices climbed.

Australia companies face scrutiny on carbon disclosure

SYDNEY, Sept 22 (Reuters) – Miners and other top Australian firms face greater scrutiny from investors on greenhouse gas emissions, with companies that do not fully disclose their carbon risks to be increasingly targeted at shareholder meetings, an investor group said on Wednesday.

The Investor Group on Climate Change said it wanted all of Australia’s top 200 listed companies to reveal data under the global Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) to allow investors to adequately assess carbon risks.

World’s top companies failing to significantly reduce carbon emissions
