MA biomass study finds complex carbon impact

Woody biomass power production is commonly thought to be carbon neutral, but a Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences study shows a more complex picture of biomass energys carbon footprint. The study, however, may have a fundamental flaw, as it bases its analyses on new forest biomass instead of the waste wood and residues most plants would use.

Samsung leads in green management

Samsung Electronics said Tuesday that it had cut its carbon emissions by 31 percent in June from the end of 2008.

In a statement released by the company to mark the first anniversary of its green management strategy, Samsung said that it has improved its energy efficiency by 16 percent on average during the same period, which cut carbon emissions by 9.6 million tons between January and July in 2009.

G4S joins major fleet carbon reduction scheme

A portion remains in the sediment, sometimes for thousands of years, while the rest is largely broken down to carbon dioxide and methane, which are released into the atmosphere. Swedish researchers have shown that carbon retention by sediment is highly temperature-sensitive and that a warmer climate would result in increased carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. The study is published in the current issue of the journal Nature.

British-Liberia ‘Forest-Saving’ Scheme Exposes Perils of Carbon Credit Plans
