UN Launches Air Travel Calculator

reports that the U.N.'s International Civil Aviation Organization has launched a in a bid to standardize the carbon offset schemes provided by various airlines. Given the fact that carbon offsetting has been initiated as a voluntary market that is devoid of stringent regulations, airlines continue to offer disparate offsets. ICAO's John Hupe said "We were very concerned with the proliferation of offsetting schemes". The has collaborated with ICAO to promote the calculator in the hope that it will regulate and increase the efficacy of the offset markets to reduce the carbon footprint of the aviation industry. According to UNWTO, and by 2020 there will 1.6 billion international arrivals.

The calculator has elicited mixed reactions. While some concur with the methodology used, others have criticized it as underestimating the impact of air travel on global warming as it measures only carbon emissions.
