Madagascar To Sell Carbon Offsets
In an attempt to save its’ most pristine forest, Madagascar will be . According to the U.N., Africa is losing its forests at twice the rate of the rest of the world.
According to , “deforestation in the tropics produces about 20% of all carbon Dioxide emissions”, and saving large, pristine forests like those in Madagascar will help offset global warming trends.
The carbon offsets are to be sold over the next years, for up to ten dollars per ton. The sales proceeds would benefit the communities in Makira forest, forest conservation and other environmental projects.
Carbon offsets from REDD, or reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation, is not included in the , yet it was decided at a meeting in Indonesia last year that “forestry would play a role in future emissions mitigation schemes”.
Many also see the selling of carbon offsets as a way to reduce poverty in their countries, as well as promoting sustainable development.
